The Better Breeder Institute certifies purposeful breeders who are dedicated to the preservation and advancement of their breed – breeders who raise the bar in their breeding programs and produce beautiful, healthy puppies that fulfill their breed standard. This helps discerning puppy buyers more easily identify the quality of breeder they wish to work with to obtain their dream puppy.

The Program ensures:

• Code of Ethics. The Better Breeder Institute’s Code of Ethics establishes the benchmark for better breeder standards, processes, and ethics, which should be the expectation of puppy buyers.
• Breeding Program Purpose. Conservation dog breeding begins with breed preservation and extends to the individual breeder’s specific purpose and objectives as they seek to advance their breed in quality, healthy, and breed type.
• Purebred Event Participation. Conservation breeders participate in at least one competitive AKC/CKC Event type to demonstrate, evaluate, and validate the produce of their breeding program.
• Championships Titles. “Better breeders produce champions.“ We recognize American Kennel Club (AKC) and Canadian Kennel Club (CKC) prefix championship titles as the extrinsic demonstration of a breeding program’s competency and accomplishment.
• Specialty Breed Club Membership. All certified breeders are an active member in good standing with at least one specialty breed club (National Breed Club and/or regional specialty club). Support of these organizations is critical to the future of our breeds.
• Health Testing. Certified breeders conduct the complete health testing protocol on their breeding stock as recommended by the National Breed Club.
• Contracts & Guarantees. Certified Better Breeders provide written guarantees to buyers and stand behind the dogs they sell. They do not allow them to be placed with brokers, dealers, or rescue organizations. This distinction is important.
• Clean and Orderly Facilities. Quality dogs reflect a quality program. The kennels and facilities of certified breeders are to be kept clean, orderly, and sanitary.
• Plus, we recognize National Specialty wins, Best in Shows, National Breed Club awards, and other club memberships. These are awards distinguishes better breeders.

All of these factors set purebred conservation breeders apart. We highlight them to empower discerning puppy buyers as they search for the breeder of their future puppy. These are the elements families should require of their breeder.
